Quick takeDeutsche Bahn will close the Piltz‘schen underpass in Heidenheim from Monday, June 15, 2026, until spring 2027. The closure is part of work on the new Brenz railway bridge and the barrier-free rebuild of the underpass.
Deutsche Bahn says work on the new railway bridge over the Brenz south of Heidenheim station is advancing visibly. As part of the same project, DB will also rebuild the Piltz‘schen underpass to make it barrier-free.
Because of that work, the underpass will close from Monday, June 15, 2026, until spring 2027. According to DB, the closure is needed for crane setup space, demolition of the existing underpass, and construction of a watertight excavation pit.
What is being built now
DB says the new bridge superstructure is almost complete. In June 2026, the prefabricated structure is expected to reach its full length of about 62 meters and a height of almost 13 meters.
Before the lift-in during the 2026 summer holidays, construction crews still need to weld and coat the individual bridge sections. DB plans to use a large crawler crane to place the new bridge parts.
Detours during the closure
For pedestrians and cyclists traveling between Heidenheim’s Oststadt and Innenstadt districts, DB names two routes:
- north via the Badehaussteg footbridge
- south via the underpass beneath federal road B 19 between Stiller Weg and Brenzstrasse
DB says a protective barrier along B 19 will separate foot traffic from road traffic.
What this means for travelers
The press release focuses on local walking and cycling access rather than additional train timetable changes. Even so, travelers crossing between the station area, Oststadt, and the city center should allow extra time while the underpass is closed.
It is sensible to follow the signed detours on site and check for short-notice updates from DB or the city of Heidenheim before traveling through the area.
