Day of Rail: Deutsche Bahn opens works, construction sites and signal boxes in Baden-Württemberg

From September 18 to 20, Deutsche Bahn invites the public to the Day of Rail in Baden-Württemberg. At several locations, the company offers insights into infrastructure, maintenance and major projects – including Stuttgart 21, the Rhine Valley Railway and the Wendlingen–Ulm high-speed line.

Quick overview

This news is particularly relevant for rail travelers because it can have concrete effects on planning, connections or infrastructure. The focus is on Day of Rail, Deutsche Bahn, Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart 21, Rhine Valley Railway, Hochrhein Railway, high-speed line and rail infrastructure. The key points are summarized compactly below.

Key points

  • DB is taking part with events in Ulm, Laufenburg, Friedrichshafen, Stuttgart, Heilbronn, Pforzheim, Karlsruhe, Haltingen and Basel.
  • In Ulm, under the motto “Inside InfraGO”, there are insights into the electronic signal box of the Wendlingen–Ulm high-speed line as well as simulators for train dispatchers.
  • In Laufenburg, visitors can tour the Rappenstein Tunnel as part of the Hochrhein Railway construction site (sturdy footwear required).
  • In Stuttgart, an experience day at Schlossplatz and paid guided tours of the Stuttgart 21 project are on the program.
  • Registration is required for the tours in Karlsruhe, Haltingen and Basel; Mannheim and the Dornstadt transshipment terminal are already fully booked.

What this means for travelers

In the short term, little usually changes for travelers, but in the long term such projects can deliver more stable timetables, better connections and more capacity. During construction phases, diversions and temporary restrictions are possible.

Context

The Day of Rail is organized by Allianz pro Schiene together with the railways in Germany and is taking place for the fifth time in 2026. Deutsche Bahn is offering a broad program in Baden-Württemberg with hands-on activities, construction site visits and workshop tours.

What to watch now

  • Check concrete timetable or construction information only once travel dates are set.
  • Allow more generous connection times for international trips.
  • Monitor the source and operator information in case dates are still provisional.
