Railway preparations for battery trains: RE 10 ready by 2028

Deutsche Bahn is adapting the infrastructure between Krefeld and Kleve for the use of new battery trains. The construction measures will be carried out in a bundled manner only in 2028 to avoid service interruptions in previous years.

Quick overview

This message is primarily relevant for rail travelers because it can have concrete impacts on planning, connections or infrastructure. The focus is on Deutschebahn, Dbinfrago, Akkutriebzug, Re10, Krefeld, Kleve and Baustelle. The key points are summarized compactly below.

Key points

  • Infrastructure adjustments for battery trains on the RE 10 line (Kleve – Krefeld) are taking place in a bundled manner in 2028.
  • In Kleve, a catenary island system for charging the batteries as well as a modernized train storage facility are being built.
  • In Geldern, a new turning track and an additional storage facility are being built.
  • All nine platforms between Kempen and Kleve are being adapted to the new vehicles.
  • Longer line closures are cancelled in 2026 and 2027; only a one-day closure is planned for October 2026.

What this means for travelers

In the short term, there is usually little change for travelers, but in the long term, such projects can bring more stable schedules, better connections and more capacity. During construction phases, diversions and temporary restrictions are possible.

Context

The measures serve to prepare for the planned delivery of the battery trains at the end of 2028. The construction process was coordinated with the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) to keep the burden on travelers low.

What to watch now

  • Check specific schedule or construction notices only when travel dates are fixed.
  • Plan generous connection times for international trips.
  • Monitor source and operator information in case dates are still provisional.
