The rules behind it
- Children up to 5: travel free, without a ticket, with a supervising person. bahn.de/agb, Nr. 3.7.1
- Children 6 to 14: travel free with at least one companion aged 15 or over when that person buys a Flexpreis or a Sparpreis ticket and the number of children is entered at purchase. For saver fares the children need a quota in the same price level. Nr. 3.7.2
- Five persons per ticket: a ticket can be issued for at most 5 persons, so one adult plus four children. Nr. 2.1.2
- More children: free with a DB Familienkarte (free for one year, issued at staffed sales points). Without it the fare for the extra children is charged afterwards, and refunded minus 7 euros if you show the card within 14 days. Nr. 3.7.3
- Children travelling alone (6 and older): half the flexible fare or half the saver fare. Nr. 3.7.4
Only for Deutsche Bahn tickets under the DB terms of carriage. Other operators, transport associations and the City-Ticket have their own child prices.
